âDonât you take that attitude with me, Zoe,â Oliver said, after his daughter had launched her own furious first salvo. He was preparing cereal for the two girls and himself. Jenny was already on her way to work.
âYou cannot elbow your way into my circle of friends, itâs gross,â Zoe said. âTiffany will think Iâm just a child.â
âYou are just a child,â her father said with a smile.
âIâm fifteen. If I was born in Afghanistan, Iâd have children by now.â
âWell, thank goodness you werenât born in Afghanistan.â
âI wish you were born there,â Lucy said. âThen Iâd get your big bedroom.â
Oliver pointed a spoon. âYou are fortunate enough, Zoe, to be born in one of the most privileged generations in human history, in one of the most stable and safest countries, to parents who love and cherish you. You have no idea how lucky you are.â
âIâm being suffocated. I canât be myself. Iâm creatively repressed.â
Oliver set down the two bowls in front of his daughters, then brought his own bowl over and sat opposite them. âWell, you will no doubt be pleased to know that she hasnât accepted my offer of friendship.â
âObviously she wouldnât, duh! The Internet is full of creeps and perverts and for all she knows you could be one of them.â
âWhatâs a creep?â Lucy asked her sister.
âI notice you didnât ask what a pervert is,â Zoe said, then grinned at her father.
Oliver sighed and said: âAll I want you to do is to be careful, Zoe. Your mother and I get no credit for giving you all the freedoms that Azalea doesnât have.â
âAll the freedoms?â Lucy asked.
âYes. Absolutely.â
âCan Zoe have sex then?â Lucy asked. âAzalea canât. Thatâs why Josh dumped her.â
Oliver rolled his eyes. âLucy, I wasnât talking about that particular freedom.â
âYou said all,â Lucy said.
Oliver turned to his youngest. âI tell you what, young lady, I think Iâm going to put you down to study law. Because you would make one hell of a lawyer.â
Zoe waved her cereal spoon at her father. âAnyway, Tiffanyâs coming to England. I said she could stay here before she heads off to see family in Scotland.â
âFor Godâs sake, Zoe!â Oliver said with a note of alarm. âYou could have asked us first.â
âShe only told me this morning. I suppose I was just being spontaneous,â Zoe responded, waving her arms theatrically.
âWhen exactly is this royal visit to take place?â
âDunno. She said sheâd let me know.â
âMaybe itâs easier if she stays with Azalea,â Oliver said. âTheyâd hardly notice her in that huge place.â
âNo! Sheâs my friend,â Zoe shouted, suddenly feeling anxious.
âPossessive, eh?â Oliver chewed a spoonful of cereal.
âMy sisterâs got a new American doll and wants her all to herself,â Lucy said.
Zoe scowled at her sister and father and took a huge spoonful of cereal.
âAll right, Zoe, just keep me in the loop, okay?â
âDad, you worry too much. Itâs going to be fine.â
